ICANN does indeed

Image
I must admit, I have not been able to understand the meaning of the “ I Can Has Cheezburger ”, instigated by this strange photo . I have spent months on this, and my conclusions are thus: The cat exists for inspirational purposes only, and serves no other purpose. A “cheezburger” is a “cheeseburger”. After that, figuring out the rest of the bizarre, encrypted message was easy. To you, strange messengers, I send a message back: Oh, and the original copy of the image is from here . Dashain is coming

Since things like this tend to creep up on me, I think it’s worth pointing out that Dashain is coming. As you can see from the calendar below, it starts on October 12 (unless it has already past, in which case you, well, can’t see that). Incidentally, the calendar was embedded using the following code provided by Google Calendar (and frankly, surprising that it exists. I just stumbled upon it when I was trying to get a link to the HTML version): <iframe src="http://www.google.com/calendar/embed?showDate=0&amp;showTabs=0&amp;showCalendars=0&amp;mode=AGENDA&amp;height=400&amp;wkst=1&amp;bgcolor=%23FFFFFF&amp;src=cf9s8v21itlme0jnqr9oe71ass%40group.calendar.google.com&amp;color=%23528800" style=" border-width:0 " width="450" height="400" frameborder="0" scrolling="no"></iframe> You can also get ahold of the XML (i.e., for an RSS/Atom feed reader), iCal (i.e., an ICS file), and HTML ...

PBRT and Mac OS X 10.4.10

For a computer graphics class , I needed to build PBRT . Being a Mac guy, I decided to build it for Mac OS X. In addition, I wanted to make sure I was using the latest version of at least PBRT (it's at 1.0.3 as of this writing). I also wanted to use Fink as much as possible for any dependencies. Getting the PBRT source code To do this, you will at least need to grab the source code for v1.0.3 from PBRT's downloads page . If you want to try and of the sample scenes, however, you will need to grab them from the CD that came with the book. After unpacking it, I moved the new folder to ~/pbrt . If you want it somewhere else, make sure to change the PBRT_SEARCHPATH environmental variable in the next step accordingly. Setting the environmental variables In Mac OS X, I believe that if a .profile file exists in your user folder, any .bashrc file is ignored. It could also be that .bashrc is just plain ignored. In any case, Bash in Mac OS X likes using .profile , so putting this...

Bad ideas and misattributing Beatles lyrics

Beatles lyrics happen to be good for attributing to other people. Observe: I am the Walrus. Goo goo g'joob. George Washington Happiness is a warm gun. Bang bang, shoot shoot. Mother Theresa I’ve got blisters on my fingers! Louis XIV

Online video

One of the things it’s clear to me I don't understand is where the world of video is going. There seem to be a lot of different options floating around right now, and they all seem to have good ideas, and yet all have pretty obvious failings that mostly let us know that this is not where things are going to come to a rest. Apple & iTunes ITunes has been great for me for music. I don’t watch music videos, and only occasionally to the radio, so I am admittedly not a major music connoisseur. However, there have been many times while watching Scrubs or the like that I find I enjoy the song playing. A quick search on Google to match the lyrics finds me the name of the song, and another quick search on the iTunes Music Store finds me the song. And if I’m lucky, there’s a DRM-less version (I don’t want to be able to copy it all over the place, I just want to be able to play it on my TiVo without having to burn it to a CD first. And maybe TiVo will release an update someday so I ...

Calories and Bad Ideas

At our local Big Bird , we can get yogurt for 60¢ per container. As it so happens, there are 60 total calories in the Light & Fit yogurts. Thus after doing the math, one comes to realize that we are getting these for 1¢ per calorie. This seems to present itself with many great ideas, where by “great”, I mean “bad”. The one I would like to posit today is the idea that all foods should at least cost as much as 1 penny per calorie. So, for example, a Triple Whopper Sandwich with Cheese and mayonnaise would cost at least $12.30 . And Burger King’s king sized chocolate milk shake would cost at least 30¢ more than that. We could therefore be using the market to force people to eat healthier, or at least fewer calories. Now, if we want this to work, and for the benefit given above, we have to make sure that providers of food don’t just use it as an excuse to bump up all their prices. So we’d want to ensure that food prices are capp...

MarsEdit 1.1.5...ever, and Sparkle

Within eight or so hours of a MarsEdit update, there appears to be a new one . It actually fixes a bug that I didn’t have, but that’s not really what I’m posting about. One of those things that can really make a Mac app shine is the use of Sparkle . Through Sparkle, a user can be notified of updates to their software, and let the software both download and install the update. What’s really great is that it looks like the next version of Sparkle will improve upon this a bunch. Instead of being notified that there’s an update when I open the program, one will be able to update all their Sparkle-enabled programs all at once. I mean, it’s fine to drag the app in to the Applications folder, we won’t have to do even that someday. Oh, and the new MarsEdit is working like a charm. Now I can work to learn all of the things it can do. Technorati Tags: MarsEdit , Mac , Sparkle
